Where does the name Hiab come from?

The term “Hiab” is derived from the abbreviation of Hydrauliska Industri AB, a company established in 1944 in Hudiksvall, Sweden, by Eric Sundin, a ski manufacturer who recognized the potential of harnessing a truck’s engine to operate loader cranes through hydraulic technology. In 1947, Hiab introduced the world’s inaugural hydraulic truck-mounted crane. Concurrently, across the Bothnian Sea in Raisio, Finland, three brothers—Mikko, Mauno, and Martti Terho—engineered a mechanical cable-operated interchangeable platform-loader, known as the Cablelift, which leveraged the truck’s front winch, allowing for the utilization of various platform bodies. In 1949, the Terho brothers founded Multilift to produce their groundbreaking load handling solutions.

The origins of the current Hiab Company can be traced back to a series of strategic acquisitions initiated by Partek Corporation starting in 1977, as part of its broader strategy for diversification and international expansion. Established in 1898, Partek Corporation holds the distinction of being one of Finland’s oldest industrial enterprises, initially focused on limestone production before evolving to offer a wide array of materials for the construction sector. In 1977, Partek embarked on a journey into the engineering sector to reduce its reliance on the domestic construction market, beginning with the acquisition of Multilift. This was followed by the acquisition of Hiab in 1985, which included its forestry crane subsidiary, Jonsered. In 1988, the company further expanded its portfolio by acquiring Loglift, another manufacturer specializing in forestry cranes.
